Vestaburg Varsity Wolverines Fall To Merrill After Surrendering Big Sixth Inning By GameChanger Media Merrill defeated Vestaburg Varsity Wolverines 9-3 on Monday thanks in part to five runs in the sixth inning. An error put Merrill on the board in the top of the second. Owen Proctor singled down the right field line, which helped Vestaburg Varsity Wolverines tie the game at two in the bottom of the second. A dropped third strike gave Vestaburg Varsity Wolverines the lead, 3-2, in the bottom of the third. Vestaburg Varsity Wolverines committed an error, which helped Merrill tie the game at three in the top of the fourth. A play gave Merrill the lead, 4-3, in the top of the fifth. Merrill scored five runs on two hits in the top of the sixth inning. An error scored two runs, Evans singled, scoring one run, Laclair singled, scoring one run, and a wild pitch scored one run. Evans earned the win for Merrill. The starter gave up four hits and three runs (one earned) over five innings, striking out nine and walking three. Colton Halgren took the loss for Vestaburg Varsity Wolverines. The right-handed pitcher went five innings, surrendering four runs (one earned) on four hits, striking out eight and walking five. Vestaburg Varsity Wolverines's Proctor, the number seven hitter, led Vestaburg Varsity Wolverines with two hits in three at bats. Vestaburg Varsity Wolverines stole four bases in the game. Vestaburg Varsity Wolverines turned one double play in the game. Laclair, the number seven hitter for Merrill, led the way with three runs batted in. The infielder went 2-for-4 on the day. Evans led Merrill with two walks. Overall, the team had a strong eye at the plate, tallying seven walks for the game. Merrill turned one double play in the game. Scholer singled in the second inning, singled in the fourth inning, and singled in the fifth inning. Vestaburg Varsity Wolverines jumped out to the lead in the top of the first inning after a passed ball scored one run, Lucas Bunton doubled, scoring two runs, and a wild pitch scored two runs. Vestaburg Varsity Wolverines added to their early lead in the top of the second inning after Colton Halgren doubled down the right field line, Scholer singled to center field, and Carter Allbee singled to left field, each scoring one run. Vestaburg Varsity Wolverines added one run in the third after Gunner Harnack walked. Scholer earned the win for Vestaburg Varsity Wolverines. The starter allowed six hits and two runs over five innings, striking out eight and walking one. Mechem took the loss for Merrill. The reliever went two and two-thirds innings, allowing five runs (two earned) on four hits, striking out three and walking three. Buckley stepped on the hill first for Merrill. The starting pitcher gave up four hits and eight runs over two and one-third innings, striking out four and walking two. Brayden Clements stole two bases. Vestaburg Varsity Wolverines ran wild on the base paths, collecting five stolen bases for the game. Vestaburg Varsity Wolverines were sure-handed and didn't commit a single error. Bunton made the most plays with eight. Laclair and Bethke were tough to handle back-to-back in the lineup, as each drove in one run for Merrill.
